Hardscaping
Paver Patios, Retaining Walls & Walkways in Yakima
Hardscape is the skeleton of a yard. It is also the part that punishes shortcuts hardest, because a patio built on a lazy base does not fail on day one, it fails in year three when the frost gets into it.
The base is the whole job
What you see is pavers. What decides whether they are still flat in ten years is the six to eight inches underneath: excavation to proper depth, compacted crushed base in lifts, and a screeded bedding layer. It is the least glamorous part of a patio and it is where most of the labor goes. We do not thin it out to win a bid.
Built for freeze-thaw
The valley cycles above and below freezing repeatedly through winter. Water that sits under a patio expands every time it freezes, and that is what lifts and cracks slabs. Correct base depth, compaction, and drainage give that water somewhere to go instead of somewhere to push.
Walls that are engineered, not stacked
A retaining wall is holding back tons of saturated soil. Ours get a buried base course, drainage gravel behind the face, and backfill compacted in lifts, with geogrid tied in where the height calls for it. If a wall is tall enough to need an engineer's stamp, we will tell you that rather than build it anyway and hope.

Common questions
About hardscaping
Pavers flex with ground movement and can be lifted and reset if something settles, which matters with our freeze-thaw. Concrete is a single slab, so when it cracks, it cracks. Concrete can be cheaper up front for a plain rectangle. We will walk you through the trade-off for your specific space.
A straightforward patio is usually a few days once we start. Excavation and base take the bulk of it. Weather and access to the yard are the two things most likely to stretch the timeline, and we will flag both when we quote.
It depends on height and location, and the rules differ between the city and the county. We will tell you when a project is heading toward permit territory so it does not become a surprise later.
